The Health Innovation Exchange country accelerators unlock the potential of local innovations in health through initiatives to fast-track their adoption, ease access for key communities and market entry in order to accelerate progress towards reaching Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and other health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Our country accelerators are open platforms, sourced from the partnership between HIEx and its local and global public-private sector partners.
India’s leadership role in creating multilateral “market shaping” mechanisms to promote innovative solutions globally, helps drive down the cost of healthcare while improving both access and adoption. India’s rapidly growing start-up network, technology strength and Government of India’s commitment to Universal Health Coverage, offers the right ecosystem for scaling innovations in healthcare. Innovations developed in India are an excellent market fit for several developing countries due to similar healthcare challenges and have significant potential for translation and adoption in the global South.
Furthering its vision of taking the healthcare innovation to the respective country settings, HIEx has launched the ‘India Accelerator Platform’ in collaboration with Government of India Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) and Tata Trust enabled Social Alpha, with the aim of fast-tracking adoption, easy access and market entry of innovative solutions for health.
"Leveraging innovation is essential to fast tracking progress to Universal Health Coverage and SDG3 targets. India’s innovation ecosystem has the potential to transform access to health – from pharma to diagnostics to digital health. The UNAIDS Health Innovation Exchange (HIEx) was set up by the UN to facilitate acceleration and adoption of technologies and innovation for health and to make them available across countries. We are very excited to partner with BIRAC and Social Alpha to establish the HIEx-BIRAC India Accelerator platform and I am confident that it will be transformative in the global journey to UHC."
The HIEx India Accelerator operates as a market shaping catalyst to position healthcare products and service to the world by unlocking the potential of the medical technologies and digital health innovations through their successful adoption, helping countries around the world accelerate their progress towards SDGs.
One of the most striking recent developments towards this initiative is that the COVID19 Innovation Deployment Accelerator has been formed and 150 odd innovations have been shortlisted that can be deployed to counter the current pandemic in a span of 30 days.

"While new solutions continue to emerge, they may not always get validated or adopted on scale to deliver impact. This gap exists due to lack of focused clinical and business acceleration, which is required to catalyze the market entry, product acceptance and catapult these startups into a winning pathway. HIEx India Accelerator is a market shaping catalyst to position healthcare products and services from global South to the world and thereby position India as a dependable healthcare superpower."
